Stash Count Week 11 of 2013

I have one word to say....

Arrrrgggghhhhh!

or maybe:

oopsie doopsie

My most bitter regret: I only have one life to give for my fabric! If fabric were the fountain of youth, I could buy more and live long enough to make all the quilts I have bought fabric for...

So without further ado...

Here's My Report

Stash Count Week 11

Used This Week:  3 yds
Used 2013: 12.5

Added This Week: 7 yards
Added 2013: 31.5

Net 2013: -19 yards

... I got a lot of scraps from our guild give-away table. I took some before the meeting, not wanting to be greedy. After the meeting, as everyone was leaving, I went back and TOOK THEM ALL! My justification was I am teaching a class on string quilting, using the Spiderweb pattern, and I needed them for my class. That was what was intended, but looking at them yesterday...well...I...ummm...you know...*gulp* I decided to keep them all.

Besides, I have two kitchen garbage bags (without the kitchen garbage in them) full of scraps I'm bringing.

Then there's someone else to blame. My sisty ugler! She came last weekend and asked if I wanted her stash? What's a girl to do?? I mean, what would you have done in my position? Or if I was to offer them to you today? Uh-huh. Caught ya!

You can find more about the sisty ugler story here

I'll be checking out how other quilters have been doing at Patchwork Times.

And here's to blogger frustration: I don't know why the font changed in the middle of the blog...but I'm too frazzulated to try and fix it.

Wiki-Saturday

Each time I woke up last night, I felt a thrill. It is Spring Break and I have nine-days of glorious relaxing, quilting and a few projects.

This morning has been Squirrel! This is my husband's way of letting me know that I tend to get distracted and look at Something Else while being involved in Something. The reference comes from the Disney movie "Up! ," where there is a dog character who will be doing something then all of sudden will perk up, look off and say "Squirrel!" I guess that means I have the attention span of a dog! BTW, "Up!" is a great movie, no matter what your age.

But I digress...(which is my way of saying Squirrel)

First thing this morning, I dropped into the quilting/computer room. Bad decision, or good, depending on how you look at it. I've been here awhile. It started with Google Reader and Bonnie Hunter's (see badge at right) Quiltville blog.

I'm looking for recipes and while reading one, I see a reference to Grebel. It is a German fry bread. I'm part German and I'm intrigued. Now the recipe search has turned into finding Grebel. Sounds yummy and I'm going to try it soon, sooner, soonest!

Here's a recipe, among many others, to just tantalize you. An important part of grebel is to freeze it after you make the dough, then thaw. Interesting, hmmm?

Grebel Recipe

That leads me to a site for Authentic German food. And realization hits me as I read recipes, I'm not going to be making much German food unless I want to gain back the 30 pounds I lost last year!

Next stop on the Road of Random-ness, I remember a soup that I ate called Pasta e Fagioli, an Italian soup made with Pasta (shells, or rotini) and Beans. I had been dreaming about a rich soup with mixed beans. So off to Google I go. First recipes then to Wikipedia to see the reference for Pasta e Fagioli.

Source: Italian Food Forever

After the reference there is a list of other Wiki-worlds. Wikiversity (Community Learning), Wiktionary (dictionary and thesaurus), Wikisource, Wikinews and more. I see Wikibooks which is  textbooks. I get intrigued (again!) and click on that link. When it comes up there is another listing of Wiki-worlds. And then I see it. (Ahhh!) WikiQuote. I love quotes!

Off I go! They have categories of quotes. I choose proverbs. The quotes are listed by the country they originated from. Being in German frame of mind, I look at those. Fun!

Here are a couple of samples from Germany.

Der Geizige ist keinem gut, ihm selbst der Ärgste.
  • Translation: The covetous man is good to none and worst to himself.
  • English equivalent: Also, "The covetous man is good to none and worst to himself."

Allein ist besser als mit Schlechten in Verein: mit Guten in Verein, ist besser als allein.
  • Translation: It is better to be alone than to be in bad company.
  • English equivalent: Better be alone than in bad company.
Alte soll man ehren, Junge soll man lehren.
  • Idiomatic translation: Grey hairs are honorable.
       I have grey hair!!!!

Now I just can't stop...I'm half German, half Danish, with English, Polish and Icelandic thrown in!

One quote from each!

Danish:
Pris en skön dag om aftenen.
  • Translation: Celebrate the day when it is evening.
Irish:
"Ní thuigeann an seach an seang."
  • Translation: "The well fed person doesn't understand the hungry one."
Polish:
 Dobre daleko sÅ‚ychać, a zÅ‚e jeszcze dalej.
  • Translation: Ingratitude is the world's reward.
Icelandic:
Goa oro finna godan samastao.
  • Idiomatic translation: Politeness costs little but yields much.
I do notice that many proverbs are the same in each language. Too bad. There is only one source, a Dictionary of European proverbs. Oh, well....it is fun looking.

The Road to Randomness has taken a turn. I'm off to shower, dress and Q-U-I-L-T!

But who knows how long that will take with all the side roads along the way?

Really Random Thursday

Random is my middle name! It's my major form of organization. I dropped in on a new blog I'm following, Live a Colorful Life. She has Really Random Thursday and I decided this would be a fun thing to blog. You can get to the blog by clicking on the badge in the right column.

My sisty ugler came down from Ashland, Oregon to visit me last Saturday. It was very short and I wish there was more time. It was fantastic to see her and my niece. My sisty ugler is looking marvelous. She retired last summer, lucky her, and she is so much more relaxed.

Before she came down she told me she was giving up on quilting. Can you believe it??? Willingly give up something so wonderful? She had found that quilting was something she could do in little amounts of time that were in between all the craziness of teaching. Now that she has left the madhouse behind, she feels like its time has passed. I guess I can't complain...I got her stash!

So here's what's sitting in front of my design wall today...

It's not an overwhelming stash, but who cares? It's fabric, lovely fabric and it's mine, all mine! (evil chuckle) My sister was more of a project quilter and I don't know how she managed to control herself and not buy pretty fabric just for the beauty of it!

Isn't this fantastic? My sister obviously has a good eye for color and design. This is a partially finished quilt. I will be in flamingo heaven when I put it together.

Here's a bin of 30's repro fabrics complete with pattern. I hear them calling me right now from the other room....Terri, Terri! Come out and play!

Isn't this going to be yummy? Again another ready to make quilt with pattern! I'm a lucky girl.

Here's just some fabric that I get to pet. There's more...you saw all the bins. There's some fabric from Zimbabwe because my sister goes there so often. A nice bin full of blues and another of blacks.

Heaven! I'm in Heaven!

Design Wall Monday

Here's the beauty that I will be finishing today.

Before it was fully finished
Trying out borders

I have put on the two borders shown above and just have one more to go. The yellow is 2-1/2 inches and the blue is 5 inches (smaller than shown above). Once I got the light border sewed on I realized I would need a final border to stop the fading off of the blue.

Today the dark blue/purple 3" border goes on. After that comes the sandwiching! I am so excited about this. The spiderweb has been a leader/ender project, so it has been coming along at a slow pace. In fact, towards the end I went full at it and just sewed the remaining wedges.

I used a free pattern from Bonnie Hunter (click here) for this beauty. My last quilt was also one of Bonnie's and a leader/ender. I've done two other quilts as L/E. One I'm still handquilting and the other is the one I'm going to share tomorrow. I just finished it yesterday. Hurrah!

I will start quilting the Spiderweb soon. I am using Leah Day's quilting book (see previous post here). A fellow blogger, Stella, at Walking Life's Path, (click here)  is helping me to figure out what designs to use on the quilt. I'm so glad for her help!

I've given the quilt a name, "Charlotte's Web." Not extremely imaginative, but I am going to applique a spider on the front and then the web that Charlotte made saying, "Some Pig."

I am linking up with Judy at Patchwork Times for Design Wall Monday (click here). Check out other quilters projects!
